If you share your home with a double-coated breed, you know that shedding is a year-round reality with dramatic peaks during spring and fall. Here's how to manage it effectively.
Never Shave a Double Coat
The most important rule: never shave your double-coated dog. The undercoat provides insulation against both heat and cold. Shaving disrupts the natural growth cycle and can lead to permanent coat damage.
Use the Right Deshedding Tool
Silicone deshedding mitts are excellent for double coats because they grip loose undercoat fur without scratching the skin. Unlike metal rakes, which can be aggressive, mitts provide a gentler approach that's safe for regular use.
Create a Shedding Season Strategy
During peak shedding (typically April-May and October-November), increase grooming frequency to daily sessions of 10-15 minutes. This prevents loose fur from matting and reduces the amount that ends up around your home.
Bathing Helps
